October Confessions

I've really been slacking in the reading department this month. I had a pretty bad reading slump not too long ago and that definitely impacted the amount that I read.

I am currently debating whether to participate in NaNoWriMo again or skip it? I can't make up my mind. Anyone else participating? Let me know!

I hope everyone has a Happy Halloween! My little guys are dressing up as pirates and are so excited!

Books Read in October:

1.  Between Two Fires by Mark Noce (Adult Historical Fiction) - 3.5 out of 5 stars
2.  An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir -(YA Fantasy) - 4 out of 5 stars
3.  The Tea Planter's Wife by Dinah Jefferies (Adult Historical Fiction) - 3.5 out of 5 stars
4.  Hungry Heart by Jennifer Weiner (Memoir) - 4 out of 5 stars
5.  This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills (YA Realistic Fiction) - 4.5 out of 5 stars (Review to come!)
6.  The Amateurs by Sara Shepard (YA Realistic Fiction) - 3.5 out of 5 stars (Review to come!)

DNF:

Something in Between by Melissa de la Cruz

1.  Favorite Book:  This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills is my favorite book this month. Guys, I loved the witty dialogue and the friendships in this novel. Keep your eye out for my review this November.

2.  Biggest Surprise: An Ember in the Ashes surprised me this month. I thought since there was so much hype around this book that I'd be disappointed, but that was not the case. It's definitely an entertaining read and one that got me out of my slump.

3.  Biggest Disappointment: Something in Between ended up disappointing me. I had high hopes since it focuses on the timely issue of immigration, but the writing style wasn't for me. I've had issues with de la Cruz's writing in the past, so I shouldn't be surprised by this.

4.  Favorite Post from October:   I'm Looking For...

5.  Favorite Part of October:   Having young kids reminds me of how much fun I had as a kid at Halloween and how much I looked forward to it. I got to experience my first "Halloween Parade" at my son's preschool and it was adorable!

What was your favorite book that you read this month? Let me know in the comments below.  Happy Halloween!

  1. I've had issues with Melissa dela Cruz's writing as well, so her books aren't really the ones I'm chomping at the bits to read. Though, I'm really curious about her latest considering the story is about a Filipino immigrant.

You still had a great month, Christina! I wish you all the best in November. :)

    1. I'm glad I am not the only one that has had issues with her writing style. It's frustrating, because I think the topic of immigration is a fantastic one for a novel. If you read it, please let me know what you think! Thanks for visiting, Joy!

  2. I had high hopes for Something in Between but after reading your thoughts on it I looked at my copy and realized I wouldn't like it either because of the way it is written. Maybe the teens at the library will appreciate it more.

I hope to read The Tea Planter's Wife this month and I will definitely be picking up This Adventure Ends. I'm glad you loved it.

We had a Halloween Boo Bash at the library yesterday and I was amazed to see some new people, especially teens and tweens that I don't normally see at the library as well as little kids. They really seemed to enjoy trick or treating and the other activities going on. I hope your son enjoyed his Halloween. We had some little pirates at the library too :) Have a great November!

    1. I think the teens would definitely appreciate it more. If you do change your mind and read it, let me know your thoughts! I think you'll really enjoy This Adventure Ends, especially since you liked First & Then! I look forward to your thoughts. Your library always has the best activities! I hope you have a great November as well. Thanks for visiting, Christina!

  3. I need to read This Adventure Ends soon, it sounds so cute.
Awww, I always loved the kids' Halloween parades when they were very young. So cute to see all the kids' costumes! I especially miss when my older two were very young and close in age so I used to dress them up in all kinds of fun "pair" costumes---Miss Tuffet and the Spider, Robin Hood & Maid Marian, I had such a blast putting their costumes together! :D

    1. It was a really fantastic read. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I hope you get your hands on a copy soon, Becky! Haha. I love the pair costume idea. Maybe I will try that next year! It's a bit different since they are both boys, but I love the idea of a theme. I tried it out with pirates this year and it was SO MUCH FUN! Thanks for visiting, Becky!
