January Confessions

I am really happy with the amount of books I read this month. I always try to read more when it's wintertime, because there's not much else to do, right? I did get distracted by Cheer, the new show on Netflix. That was brilliant! Did you watch it?

But other than that show, I tried to really tackle my TBR list. The only issue was that I didn't get to Emery Lord's new novel, and consequently, I didn't read any YA.  I have noticed that this keeps happening. I have a few theories as to why it does happen, but I am interested to hear if it is happening to anyone else? Let me know!

My son has also discovered the greatness that is Roald Dahl. We read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a last year and he liked it, but he has really loved some of his other novels this year. Let me know your favorite Dahl novel!

Books Read in January:
1.  Sanditon by Jane Austen and Kate Riordan (Adult Historical Fiction) - 3.5 out of 5 stars
2.  Husband Material by Emily Belden (Adult Fiction) 3.5 out of 5 stars
3.  Highland Crown by May McGoldrick (Adult Historical Fiction/Audio Book) - 3.5 out of 5 stars
4.  You Were There Too by Colleen Oakley (Adult Fiction) - 4 out of 5 stars
5.  All the Ways We Said Goodbye by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White (Adult Historical Fiction) - 4.5 out of 5 stars
6.  Recipe for a Perfect Wife by Karma Brown (Adult Fiction) - 4 out of 5 stars - Review to come!
7.  American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins (Adult Fiction) - 4 out of 5 stars - Review to come!

Chapter Books:
(These are the books I read with my oldest son. It has been so much fun revisiting some of my favorite novels from my childhood and reading some of the novels I missed!)
1.  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling (This was a re-read!)
2.  The Witches by Roald Dahl
3.  James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
4.  The BFG by Roald Dahl

1. Favorite Book:  I absolutely loved All the Ways We Said Goodbye. It was such a compelling historical novel. These three authors can do no wrong!

2.  Biggest Surprise:  Recipe for a Perfect Wife was a bit darker than I thought it was going to be, but I sort of liked the twisty path it went down.

3.  Biggest Disappointment: I wasn't disappointed by any novels this month. They were all decent reads, but I will say I was disappointed by certain comments made in The Witches. Sometimes I felt like they were making all women out to be these monsters....it was a little awkward at times!  It's not exactly a feminist piece of literature!

4.  Favorite Post: Top Ten Tuesday - My Most Anticipated Releases for the First Half of 2020.

5.  Favorite Part of January:  I love that you can really re-charge in January and reset your system. I am hoping next month involves even more self-care and just taking it a little slower. *fingers crossed*

What books did you read this month? Let me know your favorite in the comments below.

  1. Great month! I notice I have been moving away from YA recently. There are a few authors that I will stick with (Emma Mills, Sandhya Menon), but I don't really seek out new ones anymore unless the books sound really compelling. Some YA can just read too young and I guess unfortunately I just can't relate anymore!

    1. I know! I have been doing the same thing and it's a bummer, because I would read sooo much YA. A lot of the YA books I picked up over the past year were disappointing. I'm glad I am not the only one going through this. Thanks for visiting, Michele!

  2. Congrats on getting so much reading done! When I was a kid, my favorite Dahl novels were Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

    1. Thanks, AJ! I loved Matilda too! It still is such a great read. It was so much fun to revisit it as an adult. Thanks for visiting!

  3. I actually got All The Ways We Said Goodbye as soon as it came out at the library, but even though I was really looking forward to it, I ended up returning it. I think I need to be in the right mood for it!

    1. You do as it's wartime fiction, but it doesn't disappoint. I made the mistake of listening to Lilac Girls while I was reading All the Ways and it was too much. Thanks for visiting, Angela.
