July Confessions

I start to get panicky this time every year, because summer is just flying by. I wish winter would go by this quickly!  Thankfully, I read a few more books this month and there were so many great ones! I'm going to try to savor the last month of summer.  Fall will be here before we know it!

Books Read in July:
1.  The Golden Hour by Beatriz Williams (Adult Historical Fiction) - 4 out of 5 stars
2.  Knights Vs. Dinosaurs by Matt Phelan (Middle Grade Fiction) - 3.5 out of 5 stars
3.  Montauk by Nicola Harrison (Adult Historical Fiction) - 3.5 out of 5 stars
4.  Meet Me in Monaco by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb (Adult Historical Fiction) - 4 out of 5 stars
5.  The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore (Adult Fiction) 4 out of 5 stars (Review to come!)
6.  Surfside Sisters by Nancy Thayer (Adult Fiction) 4 out of 5 stars (Review to come!)

Chapter Books:
Ribsy by Beverly Clearly - 4 out of 5 stars

Did Not Finish:
Queen Bee by Dorothea Benton Frank - I couldn't connect to with the main character. The dialogue sounded really cheesy to me and unrealistic.  I don't know any thirty year olds that speak that way. I also had a hard time relating and agreeing with the main character's motives regarding a possible love interest. Anyway, I am disappointed because Frank's beach reads have been decent for me in the past, but needless to say, this one wasn't a good fit. Have you read it? Let me know your thoughts.

1.  Favorite Book: I really loved The Islanders. It had everything I could want in a beach read.  It was light, romantic and realistic.  I liked how the author tied three stranger's stories together and the setting of Block Island was memorable. Keep your eye out for my full review this coming week!

2.  Biggest Surprise:  Surfside Sisters by Nancy Thayer was my biggest surprise this month. Thayer's books have been decent beach reads in the past, but this one I was really into. The setting of Nantucket was fantastic, but the dynamic between two best friends who are both asipring writers interested me. I liked how Thayer told their stories from childhood to adulthood.  Full review to come!

3.  Biggest Disappointment:  Montauk was my biggest disappointment this month. It was just an ok read for me. I will say that I truly loved the setting and time period, but I felt like the characters needed to be developed a bit more.

4.  Favorite Post:  Books for Little Beach Bums

5.  Favorite Part of July:  We took a family vacation to the beach for a week this month and although it was super busy (boardwalk, rides, ice cream, playground, restaurants, beach, boogie boarding, etc), it was still so much fun for my family. I even sat on a beach chair for an extended period of time, which parents of toddlers know this is like capturing a unicorn. What was your favorite part of this month?

What was your favorite book you read this month? Which one was disappointing? Let me know your thoughts!

  1. We also took a trip to Wildwood/Cape May and it was a great time! I had a few 5 star reads last month - I continued my Elin Hilderbrand backlist reads and The Identicals was really fun.

  2. Your vacation photos were making me so nostalgic for my childhood vacations at the Jersey Shore! I'm in the middle of The Golden Hour now and really enjoying it.

  3. But for real, though, why can't winter go as quickly as summer...or really summer as slow as winter. Glad you had a nice vacation! I'll have to check out The Islanders.
