I Watched the Show Before I Read the Book and Other Bookworm Confessions

So, in true bookworm fashion, I usually read the book and then watch the TV show or movie.  But for the first time, I did the opposite. I am wayyyy behind with my reading this year, so I knew I wouldn't have time to pick up Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. I loved Gone Girl and I'm sure I would enjoy Sharp Objects, but time is of the essence.

So, the show is about a journalist, Camille, who comes back home to Wind Gap, Missouri in order to investigate the murder of two girls. This is not the norm at Wind Gap; the town has always been pretty boring, but now she is wondering if they have a possible serial killer on their hands?

Coming home isn't easy though. Her mother is a bit of an overbearing socialite who prides herself on being an important member of the Wind Gap community. Camille's relationship with her mother isn't great.  Then there's her step-sister, Amma, who is also a bit strange. One minute she acts like her mother's perfect child and the next minute she acts like a rebellious teenager.

Camille, played by the amazing Amy Adams, is troubled. She deals with alcoholism as well as some other psychological issues.  It's disturbing, but done very well. Regardless of her issues, I found myself rooting for her.  I often questioned whether Camille was a reliable narrator as I know this is a psychological thriller and even though I usually didn't agree with Camille's choices, I ended up caring a lot about her.

And, we can't forget, there's the mystery of the murders!

The acting was brilliant in Sharp Objects. Every actor really brought it! I'm sure the cast will win some awards this year. Also, the way it was filmed was so creepy, yet very effective.

By the last episode, I could see what was coming, but it was so disturbing in the kind of way that you just can't stop watching.

Did you guys watch Sharp Objects? What did you think of it? Did you read the book first? Let me know your thoughts!

  1. I watched! But I read the book first. I kind of wish I hadn't, because I found the ending of the book SO surprising and, of course, when I watched the show I knew what was going on right from the start - so it kind of detracted from the show a little bit for me. I thought the acting was great in the show (a real breakout role for Eliza Scanlen) but I felt the pace was slow at times. I also found the show difficult to watch in places (the self-harm stuff). Overall I enjoyed it, though I remember liking the book more (it's been a few years since I read it). Also, I had a bit of a crush on John Keene. Hot stuff! :D

    1. I could see how that would happen if I read the book in advance. For once, I was happy to not have read it. Eliza Scanlen was amazing! Haunting! I agree about the pace. The first five episodes were definitely slow and I almost gave up on the show. Yes, the self-harm stuff sort of freaked me out, but I was amazed by Amy Adams. She did an awesome job. Haha. You crack me up about John Keene. He did have a Riggins vibe. ;) Thanks for visiting, Leanna!

  2. I watched Sharp Objects and thought it was okay. I probably won’t read the book. I have too much other stuff to read. That’s strange for me because I usually insist on reading the book before I see the movie/show.

    1. I agree. I normally force myself to read the book before I watch the movie or show, but in this case, it was the total opposite. I think I just wasn't ready to read another psychological thriller. I was happy I didn't read it in advance so I could be surprised by a few of the twists. Thanks for visiting, AJ.

  3. I haven't watched or read either of these, but I'm often torn when book adaptations come out which to do first! Sometimes I like to watch first because then I won't be so disappointed when they leave so much out of the movie! xD

    1. I know! This was my first time going the route of not reading the book prior and it worked out well in my favor! I was surprised by a few of the twists. Thanks for visiting, Becky!
