It's Not You, It's Me (15)

"It's not you, it's me."  Some books just don't work for me, whereas other readers may have really enjoyed them.  This feature will be showcasing books that I never finished or reviewed; you know…...the dreaded DNF.

Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan
Goodreads says,"Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead. But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized. With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet. With lush writing and a star–crossed romance, Reign of Shadowsis Sophie Jordan at her best."

My Thoughts: Guys, I normally love Sophie Jordan. I've read a few of her books and have enjoyed them overall, but this one wasn't working for me. For starters, if you are going to create a complex fantasy world, then your world-building better be outstanding; otherwise, I have a hard time suspending my disbelief.  That was the case here. I needed more background regarding the setting.

Also, there's insta-love. I've said before I can stand it if it's done well, but I just wasn't feeling it this time around. Needless to say, I knew this book wasn't for me. I have noticed that I struggle with retellings (this one is supposed to be based on Rapunzel), so perhaps I need a break from retellings unless the author happens to be Marissa Meyer

What do you guys think? Have you read this book? Let me know your thoughts. What's the latest book that you added to your did-not-finish pile?

  1. Aw, I'm sorry this didn't work for you Christina! I really enjoyed this one, but I'm also a huge fan of fairy tale retellings:) There are definitely certain genres that never seem to work for me no matter how hard I try to force myself to like them, so it seems like fairy tale retellings just might be that kind of genre for you!

    1. Thanks, Jenny. I guess it helps if you enjoy this genre. Retellings for me haven't been very good, except for the Lunar Chronicles series. Thanks for visiting!

  2. Oh geez. This book hasn't been getting the best of reviews, to be honest. I don't think I'll be picking up a copy of this one anytime soon. Lol.
