August Confessions

Every August, I sort of get this nervous energy that stays with me throughout the month. I know summer is slowly slipping away from me, but like all good things, it must come to an end.  I am trying hard to look forward to all that fall has to offer, but, boy, am I going to miss those long summer days. Summer 2014: Thank you and it's been a good ride.

One thing I am excited about regarding this upcoming fall….the new books and incredible giveaways! There are so many awesome books being published in the next few months that I am looking forward to reading (Illusions of Fate, Made For You, Compulsion, Salt & Storm, to just name a few). And you better believe I will finally be reading Gone Girl before the movie comes out! Can't wait!

Books Read in August:
1.  The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson - 4 out of 5 stars
2.  Island Girls by Nancy Thayer - 4 out of 5 stars
3.  Rules of Summer by Joanna Philbin - 3.5 out of 5 stars
4.  Jane Austen's First Love by Syrie James - 3.5 out of 5 stars
5.  Just Listen by Sarah Dessen - 4 out of 5 stars
6.  Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander #2) by Diana Gabaldon - 4.5 out of 5 stars
7.  The Jewel by Amy Ewing - 3.5 out of 5 stars (Review to come)

Karakung Creek - August 2014
1. Favorite Book: Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon - What can I say? I love the Outlander series, even though it takes me FOREVER to read her books. I didn't love this book as much as the first, but it was still very entertaining.

2.  Biggest Surprise: Island Girls by Nancy Thayer is a beach read that I enjoyed more than I thought I would.  Sometimes you just need a cold drink and a light beach read on a hot summer afternoon and this book fit the bill.

3.  Biggest Disappointment: The Jewel by Amy Ewing - I was hoping to like this one a bit more than I did. The romance really didn't work for me.  I'll explain more in my review posting next week.

4.  Favorite Part of August: We took a long weekend down the shore a few times this month and I absolutely loved it.  We took our little guy on Ocean City's Boardwalk, went on rides, got ice-cream, ate pizza, ate seafood, went to happy hour, and hung out with friends and family. Perfection.

5.  Favorite Post: Books I'd Give to Readers Who Have Never Read Historical Fiction - I always recommend these fantastic historical reads, especially to readers who aren't so sure about this genre.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you have a great weekend,

  1. I am glad you got to enjoy time with your family at the shore. A great way to end the summer :)

I was not sure I'd like The Jewel so I didn't request it for review. The cover reminded me of Winner's Curse but the synopsis didn't grab me. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it.

What is it about big books that are worth it in the end? It does take time to get through Diana Gabaldon's books as well as George R.R. Martin's. I finally read A Clash of Kings in August and now I want to read the third book but I am putting off for a little while so I can catch up on some review books first.

    1. Thanks, Christina! The Jewel was just a little better than ok for me. I hear you about larger books! I love the Outlander series, but it takes forever for me to get through them and then my review pile consequently overflows. haha. Thanks for visiting, Christina!

  2. I absolutely loved Rules of Summer by Joanna Philbin. I got absorbed into it and bought the sequel. And I also loved Island Girls by Nancy Thayer, and the whole "Summer I Got Pretty" series. Looking forward to more of your reviews for the fall. I still have some summer reading to do, as we leave for OC MD this coming Sunday. So I have a week to read beach books. :)

    1. Rules of Summer was a fun beach read! I read some mixed reviews for the sequel, so I may wait to read it. I'm so glad you loved Island Girls (me too!) and of course, my favorite, Jenny Han's Summer series. Thanks for checking out my reviews and I hope you have a great time at OCMD. Enjoy! Thanks for visiting!

  3. I have been really looking forward to The Jewel but lately I'm seeing lots of "good, but not great" kinds of reviews and I'm starting to be a little less rabid about reading it, haha.

  6. August makes me antsy for fall and sweaters. Not that I want winter yet, I just love fall so much.
