Beach Reads for Little Beach Bums - Part II

Last year, I shared my favorite beach reads for children.  This year I am adding a few books to my list.

Baby's First Slide and See Under the Sea - I adore this Usborne book and so does my son.  He has just started to slide the parts oft he book to reveal other scenes and animals. I love that it is interactive.

The Seashore Book by Charlotte Zolotow - This is a gorgeous book that I loved reading aloud to my son. My son wasn't as impressed by it as I was, but it had me imagining a beautiful day at the beach right along with the little boy in the story.

The Berenstain Bears Go on Vacation by Stan and Jan Berenstain - We loved the Berenstain Bears in our house and this one is a hit. I love all the family fun they have on Gull Island. It would be the perfect read before a family vacation to the beach.

Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach by James Dean - Who doesn't love Pete the Cat? Pete is a little afraid of the ocean and doesn't want to go surfing like his brother, but finally when he gains the courage, he realizes it's a lot of fun. I think many kids can relate to this.

Beachy and Me by Bob Staake - I love this unlikely friendship between a lonely girl and a whale. This is a cute story about friendship.

The Whale in my Swimming Pool by Joyce Wan - This story always makes my son laugh. It's about a whale that is in a little boy's swimming pool and he tries everything under the sun to get him to leave. It's a lot of fun!

There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea by Jessica Law - This book is really catchy and the audio CD is a lot of fun as well. My son loves to listen to the song and follow along with the book. It even teaches you about the food chain as it goes over what each ocean animal eats.

Beach by Elisha Cooper - This book beautifully captures the magic of a day at the beach. Readers will feel like they too are building sandcastles, running from waves, and other activities that come to mind when you think of the beach.

Just Grandma and Me by Mercer Mayer - We love the Little Critter books and this one is very cute. Little Critter spends the day at the beach with his grandma.  It's adorable!

The Magic Schoolbus on the Ocean Floor by Joanna Cole - For kids who love science, there is nothing better than this series, which combines scientific facts with a great adventure. Ms. Frizzle and her crew head to the ocean floor and explore all that it has to offer.

Flotsam by David Weisner - This Caldecott winner is all about a boy who goes to the beach to look for some interesting things that have floated ashore and found an underwater camera.  Then of course an adventure ensues. There's no words to this book--just gorgeous pictures!

  1. Great list, Christina! Who says only adults can read while at the beach? :D

    1. Thanks, Joy! I know, right?! My son likes to take all of his favorite beach themed books with him when we go to the shore, so that's what inspired this post. Thanks for dropping by.
