Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Villains

Sometimes a good villain can be just as, if not more, compelling than the protagonist.  I had entirely too much fun compiling a list of my favorite villains.  Here they are:

1.  Captain "Black Jack" Randall from Outlander series- He is such a complex and sinister villain. I love how he is portrayed in the Outlander TV show as well. He's sadistic and truly frightening.

2.  Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series - Oh man! I think I still have nightmares about this guy. How could you not? And then seeing him come to life in the movie only solidified my fears.

3.  The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz - She scared the bejesus out of me when I was little, especially her flying monkeys. I can still hear her say, "I'll get you, my pretty -and your little dog, too."

4.  Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life - This is one of my favorite movies and I think Mr. Potter  is one of the best antagonists ever written.  I think what makes him so scary is the fact that one could encounter a similar person in the real world.

5.  The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs- I recently re-watched this movie after not seeing it for years and forgot how terrifying this gal is. I mean she wants the Huntsman to cut out Snow White's heart. Whoa.  Even in the Grimms' fairy tale, I believe she says for the Huntsman to cut out her liver and lungs. This queen doesn't play around, folks.

6.  Cruella De Vil from A Hundred and One Dalmatians - Originally a character from Dodie Smith's classic novel, Cruella De Vil stays with you. What kind of person wants to skin puppies and wear them?  Nightmare, I tell you. In the novel, she suggests drowning animals that she deems as worthless. Someone call PETA, please.

7.  The Joker from Batman - I think I am still a little terrified of this villain.  Whether portrayed in a movie or a comic, this super villain has always creeped me out since he is a bit of a mastermind. Most argue that he's a psychopath and I agree.

8.  Joffrey Baratheon from Game of Thrones series -  I don't think I wanted to see the downfall of a character as much as  I wanted to see Joffrey's.  He's spoiled, stupid, cruel, and a narcissist.  The worst combination possible.

9.  President Snow from the Hunger Games series - There's nothing scarier to me than a sadistic and psychotic ruler and in this case, Snow fits the bill. Ugh. I loathed him in the books.

10.  Professor Umbridge from the Harry Potter series - Rowling has created such memorable villains and this one has always stayed with me.  Dolores Umbridge: The cruel and abusive teacher.  I believe the great Stephen King even referred to Umbridge as one of the greatest villains since Hannibal Lecter.

So, let me know what you think of my favorite villains. Who are some of yours? Let me know in the comments below.  This meme is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

  1. Voldemort and Umbridge would definitely make my list. So would Joffrey and Black Jack Randall. I'd also add Ramsay Bolton and Bellatrix Lestrange. Pure evil. Great list!

  4. JACK RANDALL!!!!! I don't even love to hate him, I just despise him and wish awful things on him Christina. Same with Umbridge. *itches to punch her* Heath Ledger's Joker I loved to hate though, he made me happy even though he had violent tendencies ;-) Fantastic choices!!!
