Friday Five and a Giveaway (32)

Happy Friday! Sometimes I like to talk about what I am currently into that is not necessarily book related. Here's what I have been up to/thinking about/enjoying lately. Let me know what you think!

1.  Reading My Own Books - I have been reading a ton of books for review this summer (which is a good thing! Not complaining!), but I also want to read some books that have been collecting dust on my shelf.  I may break out my old feature of "Dust off the Shelves" and catch up on some books that I want to read. I don't know why I haven't participated in this feature a bit more often; I started in 2013!! Since then, I have only read four books from my dusty shelves, which is pretty much an epic fail. But what I did read was awesome (Looking for Alaska, Just Listen, The Winter Sea and Seven Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake), so what should I read next?  Big Little Lies? Me Before You? Cress? The Greatest Knight? Too many choices!

2.  Harry Potter - I am a huge fan. HUGE. But I have no desire to read the latest novel. Is that weird? For me, it all ended in the final book and there's no need to return to the story. Have you guys read it? Thoughts? Who knows. Maybe I will change my mind.

3.  Adult Fiction - This summer I have gravitated towards a lot of adult fiction. I kind of feel weird about it. I am receiving more adult novels for review, so that may be why, but lately YA has been letting me down.  Don't get me wrong, I love YA and I'll champion it till the end, but lately it hasn't completely wowed me with the exception of Salt to the Sea, When We Collided and The Court of Mist and Fury. Any one else experiencing this?

4.  Podcasts - Anyone have any great podcasts that they can recommend to me? I have been exercising a lot lately to build up my strength after my surgeries and I love listening to a good podcast. I have enjoyed Outlander Cast, and The Scot and the Sassenach, but because we are in the thick of #Droughtlander, there haven't been too many episodes.  I also just started Serial and am hooked. So, what are your favorite podcasts? I am new to this. Let me know!

5.  Giveaway - Thanks to Penguin Random House, I am giving away a copy of Between Worlds by Skip Brittenham, which comes out August 30th.  It has an awesome augmented reality component to it.  How cool is that? Plus, Harrison Ford blurbed the book!! This giveaway is open to US readers only and the deadline is August 22nd. Please refer to my giveaway rules. Good luck!

  1. I should participate in that feature, too! I have a ton of books in need of love. My basement is full of them!

    1. I hear you, Joy! When I moved, I donated and sold a bunch of my books, but I still have shelves full of books that I want to read...I need to either decide to read them or get rid of them! Thanks for visiting!

  2. I'm the same way about HP Christina! It ended on a high note, the last book was outstanding for me, so I don't feel compelled to read this one. I'm also really worried it won't live up to the others, especially since it's more in script format, and I don't want my last HP moment to be one of disappointment:(

    1. Yeah, I am just on the fence about it. Exactly my thoughts though...glad you agree! Have a great weekend, Jenny!

  3. I am purposely reading more books for adults though I still read some YA. I'm also reading more YA contemporary than I used to. Right now I want to catch up on all the review books I already have and I want to read more library books that I pick out for fun. Too many times I check stuff out and then don't have time to read it because of review books!

I read HP and the Cursed Child. I knew going in that as a play it would be different than reading a novel. I had also read the spoilers so I knew the basic plot and "twists". I treated it like HP fanfiction which is kind of what it read like. There were some ridiculous things in the plot and the characterizations were off. Even the dialogue didn't read like the dialogue in Harry Potter novels. J.K. Rowling's name may be on the script but I don't think she actually wrote it. If you are curious about it, I suggest getting a copy from your library and treating it like a work of fan fiction rather than "Harry Potter canon".

    1. I hear you. There are so many good books that I want to read and when I get them out from the library, I sometimes don't have enough time to read them! Thanks for the heads up regarding HP. I may check it out from the library and read it as fan fiction as you say. That's a good idea, otherwise, I may be too disappointed. Thanks for visiting, Christina!
