Books on the Big Screen (9)

I may have covered a few of these movies/TV shows before, but here's some updated information.  Which ones are you most looking forward to?

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson - September 2nd - I have seen this book just about everywhere.  Robert Redford is in it.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner - September 18th - I adored the first book in this series, but never got around to reading the second book. Maybe this movie will inspire me to grab a copy?

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer - September 18th- The film is called Everest and includes Jake Gyllenhaaul and Keira Knightley. I'm intrigued.

Room by Emma Donoghue - October 16th - I've heard a lot of praise for this book, but never got around to reading it.  I'm not sure it's for me though.

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin - November 6th - I've been hearing a lot about this movie and I even bought a copy of the book to read before I see it on the big screen.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - November 20th - I am definitely looking forward to Part II.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley - November 25th - The film will be called Victor Frankenstein and will have Daniel Radcliffe as Igor.

The Martian by Andy Weir - November 25th - Ridley Scott is directing and Matt Damon, Kristin Wiig, and Jessica Chastain are tied to this film. I heard the book is awesome.

In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick -December 11th - Ron Howard is directing and Chris Hemsworth is in it.  It seems to be action packed.

The Revenant by Michael Punke - December 25th - Leonardo DiCaprio is in this one, but I haven't heard much about it. This is another one that seems action packed.

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare - The TV show will be called Shadowhunters and premieres January 2016 on ABC Family. I hope the casting is better than the recent movie.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - March 4th -Tim Burton is directing and Samuel L. Jackson is in it!

Allegiant by Veronica Roth - March 18th - I wasn't the biggest fan of Divergent on the big screen, so I am feeling a little indifferent about this one; however, I know many people are excited for this.

  • The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
  • A Hologram for the King by Dave Eggers - Tom Hanks is in it!
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is currently in development.

  • Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarity - I hear it's coming to HBO in 2016 as a TV series and includes Reece Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

  1. I was disappointed that Me Before You got pushed back to next year when it was supposed to be out this month. I was planning to watch it as a treat to myself for my birthday. At least the sequel will be published next month.

I am looking forward to A Walk in the Woods. We read it in book group. I thought it was really funny and somewhat interesting (there were some pacing issues when it got too descriptive about forestry, etc.). I also want to see The Martian although I couldn't get into the book. I'm also looking forward to Big Stone Gap (starring Ashley Judd). I haven't read the book yet but we will be reading it in one of my book groups next month and I can't wait.

I will have to check out Brooklyn. I didn't know they were making a movie of it.

    1. I still need to read Me Before You, Christina, so hopefully this postponement will give me enough time. I will have to check out A Walk in the Woods--sounds pretty good and I see it everywhere!
How could I have forgotten Big Stone Gap? I love Ashley Judd and Adriana Trigiani's books are so great...I should check that one out! Thanks for visiting!

  2. SO EXCITING CHRISTINA!!!! I love seeing so many books make it to the big screen (even though inevitably they don't quite do the book justice). I think the Hunger Games series has been really well done though, and I the previews for The Martian look AMAZING, so I have high hopes for all of these:) And I'm glad the Shadowhunters series is getting a second chance, I think it will do better as a TV series! Like Buffy.

    1. I know, right?! I always get my hopes up though. You are so right about Shadowhunters. The movie made a few years ago was so disappointing only because the casting just didn't work for me, so I think it will translate better to TV as long as they get the casting right. So far I think they have! I'm excited to check it out in January. Thanks for visiting, Jenny!

  3. Oh, my gosh; there are so many good ones on this list! I can't wait for Mockingjay (we go to the theater to see these!!) and I also really want to see Everest. You KNOW that Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is going to be bizarre and delightful; that will also be a must-see for me. I had no idea about The Engagements!! That's exciting! GAH! So many choices!! Thanks for sharing these and I hope you have a great weekend!

    1. I agree. Mockingly is a must in the theaters. I am excited for Peregrine, but I haven't read the book yet. I am excited about The Engagements. Part of the story takes place in my neighborhood, so that would be cool if they filmed it locally. Thanks for visiting, Tara!

  6. OH MY, Night Circus would be amazing on screen, but I do hope they get it into the right hands. 13 reasons Why would likely require a full box of kleenex lol. SO excited for Peculiar Children and the cast that's been revealed so far. Great post, Christina! Thanks for sharing about all of these!
