It's Not You, It's Me (10)

"It's not you, it's me."  Some books just don't work for me, whereas other readers may have really enjoyed them.  This feature will be showcasing books that I never finished or reviewed; you know…...the dreaded DNF.

Trusting Liam by Molly McAdams - Guys, I really enjoyed Taking Chances, one of McAdams' other novels, so I thought for sure this one would be decent and perfect as a beach read, but I just couldn't do it. It felt a little too formulaic for me. Also, there were some moments when the feminist in me wanted to burn it all down, such as when he said to her, "You're mine" and not in the hot Jamie Fraser way, in the creepy overprotective way.

Illusionarium by Heather Dixon - I struggled with this story. It is set in a really unique dystopian world, but the author didn't give me enough background on why the world is the way it is or enough world building. It was really strange. I also struggled with her other novel Entwined.

Proof of Forever by Lexa Hillyer - I love a good time travel story, but if I don't buy into your time travel methods, then I can't get on board. I just wasn't buying it, which is a shame as I love the setting of summer camp.

Between Us and the Moon by Rebecca Maizel - The main character is super quirky and normally that doesn't bother me, but in this book it did. She was just a little too strange for me to the point where I couldn't relate to her at all. In sum, I wasn't invested.

What about you guys? Have you read these books? What are your thoughts? What makes you put a book down for good?

  1. I've never been able to get into another Molly McAdams book like I did with Taking Chances. All of hers seem to follow pretty much the same formula! I am reading Between Us and the Moon now and I am struggling with it a bit. It's not terrible - but the MC is really hard to relate to. There's quirky -and then there's the walking disaster that this girl seems to be! Pity about Proof of Forever - it sounded promising!

    1. Yeah! I have noticed that as well, Leanna. You are totally right about that. I DNF Between Us and I was hoping to pick it up again this month, but I don't think I am going to...either that or I'll wait for your review to see what you think. Thanks for visiting!

  2. Sometimes, if I can't get into the characters and/or their story, it's really tough for me to continue on; with the book I've just started, I'm not sure how quickly the story is going to move on and that's kind of a deal-breaker for me, too. I don't want to read the same thing over and over, you know? We'll see; I'm going to stick with it for a little while longer. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has these problems! I think when you read as many books as we do, it's going to happen. Hope you have a great weekend, Christina!

    1. I completely agree with you, Tara! Life is too short to read a book that isn't something that we enjoy. I always feel bad setting a book aside, especially if it's for review, but not every book is going to be five stars, you know? Thanks for visiting!

  3. I haven't read any of those! I tend to dislike a lot of popular books, and often have to shelve them as did not finishes. I'm currently reading Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven, and I swear I'm not even reading the same book as the other rave reviewers.

    1. Haha. That happens to me from time to time. Everyone will absolutely LOVE a book and then I'll read it and be underwhelmed. You are definitely not alone in that. Thanks for visiting!

  4. This is a very informative post, Christina. I'm glad I got to read it because I was looking forward to reading Proof of Forever. It might not be my thing either.

    Happy reading!

  5. Too bad about Illusionarium - always frustrating when not enough background is given!

I'm a bit nervous about Between Us and the Moon - I keep hearing that about the MC.

    1. Yeah, it just didn't work for me. I needed more of an explanation! Yeah, it seems that Between Us is a hit or a miss...been reading some very "meh" reviews. Thanks for visiting, Lea!

  6. I heard mixed things about The Proof of Forever. I think I'll be skipping Between Us and the Moon. I don't like it when a character is very quirky. I DNF'ed some books because of that (the YA mystery No One Else Can Have You, for instance).

If I don't like a character or the pacing is too slow or the writing style doesn't appeal to me I DNF the book. Sometimes I skip ahead to see if things get better or just to find out what happens in the end without reading the whole thing!

    1. Yeah, you are right....definitely mixed reviews for Proof of Forever, which is a shame b/c I love the concept. I agree about the writing style. If it doesn't work for me, I can't continue. Thanks for visiting, Christina!

  7. I'm so sad about Proof of Forever. I've been wanting to read that one for a while.
