Friday Five (13)

Happy Friday! Sometimes I like to talk about what I am currently into that is not necessarily book related. Here's what I have been up to/thinking about/enjoying lately. Let me know what you think!

1. Books Dealing with Death/Suicide/Missing People - Guys, I need a break from this. Big time. Anyone else? I've read Better Than Perfect, Twisted Fate, Vanishing Girls, The Last Time We Say Goodbye, The Girl on the Train and Dead to Me, which all deal with the above topic in some way. I have also been given a few books for review that seem along the same lines, such as Playlist for the Dead and Finding Mr. Brightside. I feel like there have been a ton of books dealing with this topic and it has me running for the hills.  I need to read some fun, light, sunshiny books and take a break from grittier reads. Tell me I am not the only one who feels this way lately?

2.  Game of Thrones Season Five -Yes to all of this. Have you seen the new trailer

Plasma Car
3.  Plasma Car - I bought my kid this car when it was on sale at my local toy store and seriously it's the best money I've spent on him in awhile. He loves it; he rides it all through the house, and doesn't need my help with it at all. It uses magic inertia (I think?!) to go and requires no pushing or batteries. It's downright fun! In fact, I ride on it from time to time. I secretly want my own.

4.  The 100 - Thanks to a few recommendations from my bookish friends (especially Lea at YA Book Queen), I saw that this show was on Netflix. It took awhile to get going, but man, I am sort of OBSESSED with this show. It's awesome if you like sci-fi and the dystopian genre along with strong female leads. I have to admit though, this show sort of makes me want to have a panic attack. THE STRESS!  Also, why doesn't the CW push this show more?  I didn't even know the show existed until I heard about it from you guys. What gives? Lastly, has anyone read the YA books this show is based on?

5.  Cadbury Creme Eggs - It must be spring…almost..because these bad boys are back in my house.

Thanks for visiting and let me know what you think,

  1. I definitely agree with your first point. It seems like there are a lot of books those topics that are being published right now or promoted as ARCs. I know with the books for adults that the popularity of Gone Girl has really increased the demand for darker suspense with unreliable narrators.

I have been reading lots of war novels lately between The Girl You Left Behind, The Bridal Chair, and The Nightingale (all of them set in France in WWI or WWII). I need a break from dark and depressing too. Unfortunately I have to read The Winner's Crime before the ARC expires and I have An Ember in the Ashes to review for Amazon soon too. I did just get an ARC of The Royal We which is supposed to be inspired by the love story of William and Kate so maybe I'll read that for a breather or see if I can find something else like a light murder mystery.

    1. YES! I am glad you agree, Christina. I totally need a break from these kinds of reads. I think you are right about Gone Girl sort of inspiring a lot of writers, but all the books dealign with drugs and suicides has gotten to be a bit depressing. I could use a Sarah Dessen right about now. :)

I love the WWII books though, so I would have to check out the ones you suggest. What is this Royal We you are referring to?!?! That sounds amazing. I must check that one out. Have a great weekend, Christina and thanks for visiting!

  2. I'm with you on being tired of books about murder and illness. I did a post on this a while back - 2015 seems to be the year of the dead and the missing.
I just finished watching season 1 of the 100. It's pretty good! Hoping season 2 comes onto Netflix next week!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics

    1. Did you really? I must have missed that one. Great minds think alike. I hope this is a trend that will die out, because it's rather depressing. I'm glad you like The 100 as well. I am currently watching season two and things get CRAZY! Thanks for visiting, Jen!

  3. OH! The Cadbury creme eggs! Why did you have to bring this up, Christina! I'm going to have to go get one now...I love those silly things! Jonathan sort of watches me in disgust as I eat the very end off of it and then enjoy the sugary goodness on the inside (and get it all over my face); they're so wicked. I have to take a break sometimes from the "serious" reads and find something lighter to read in between; otherwise, I don't really enjoy them in the same way that I might if I hadn't read them so close together, you know? I love your Friday Five posts! Hope you have a great weekend, and don't hurt yourself on the plasma car (hilarious).

    1. Haha. I love that you enjoy this as much as me. You pretty much described my experience when eating these things. They are just too good. You are right about taking a break from serious reads. I haven't done that too much b/c of all the grittier ones i need to review and I am definitely over this genre. I could use some light reads set at the beach right about now! :) Thanks for visiting and good lucks with your race today, Tara!

  4. I love Cadbury Cream Eggs so much. It's a problem. I'm actually glad they are only available for a couple of months a year because I would way five hundred pounds if I could get them year round.
I know exactly what you mean about heavy books. I read I Was Here and Vanishing Girls pretty close together and definitely need something lighter. I'm read The Start of You and Me (which I'm loving), but even in it the girl is still dealing with the death of her boyfriend. I might need to break into the summer arcs a bit early.
I have Netflix. I'll have to check out The 100. Thanks for the heads up. And YES to the new season of GoT. Happy weekend!

    1. Me too, Natalie! I know I am not alone in that. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Star of You and Me. There have been so many darker reads lately. I really need a break from them. YES to the summer books! Thanks for visiting, Natalie!

  5. OMG! I LOVE Creme Eggs! So yum! And that plasma car looks like a lot of fun! I added The 100 to my list but I just have so many shows right now. I started on the new season of House of Cards last night. So much doom and gloom in my reading lately too. Over it.

    1. Me too! I'm obsessed. It's really bad. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The 100. I am on season two now and it's pretty intense. I really should get into HoC. My husband has started watching it and really enjoy it, but there are SO many shows! I am over the doom and gloom too. I am glad you agree…I need more beach reads in my life! Thanks for dropping by, Leanna!

What a great little bike! We have an old fashioned style pink tricycle. I'm curious about the wheels on this one though.

    1. He has an old fashion tricycle as well that we enjoy outside, but when I saw this one, I knew it would be fun indoors. You should definitely check it out, Juju! Thanks for dropping by!
