"We've Got History" Blog Tour and Giveaway

I am so pumped to be a part of the "We've Got History" tour for the paperback release of Order of Darkness: Changeling by Philippa Gregory. If you missed my review of the book, check it out here.  You guys know how much I love historical fiction and Changeling brings to life the medieval age.

As part of the tour, I was asked the question, "If you could go back in time, which era would you choose?" Man, this is a tough question, but I'd say that the time period I am most fascinated with is the 1940s.  You are probably wondering why since the 1940s was dominated by WWII, but I love the fashion and the music.  Big Bands (which I LOVE!) were big at the beginning of the decade and then later on famous singers like, Bing Crosby, The Andrews Sisters, and Count Basie were all the rage.  The radio was of great importance for people living in the 40s and I often think about how cool that would be.  I mean who doesn't dream of a world without Facebook from time to time?

Movies were also huge during the 1940s and some of my favorite movie stars from this time are Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart to just name a few.  Who wouldn't want to see Casablanca or It's a Wonderful Life on the big screen?

Now, let's talk fashion. During the war, fashion struggled a bit, but once the war ended more fashion trends emerged, such as Dior's "New Look" and cocktail dresses came back into play. Check out this gorgeous dress from 1949 or this fashion photograph for Lord & Taylor from 1940.  And if you aren't completely sold yet, check out these ads from the 1940s. I especially like Rita Hayworth's lip stick ad...so glamorous!

Thanks to Simon Teen, I am giving away one copy of Order of Darkness: Changeling and a limited edition "We've Got History" tote bag to one lucky US reader.  Refer to my giveaway rules and fill in the Rafflecopter form. The deadline is March 1st.

Meanwhile, check out this information about Philippa Gregory (one of my favorite authors!) and the series below:

"The year is 1453 and all signs point to it being the end of the world. Accused of heresy and expelled from his monastery, handsome seventeen-year-old Luca Vero is recruited by a mysterious stranger to record the end of times across Europe. Commanded by sealed orders, Luca is sent to map the fears of Christendom and travel to the very frontier of good and evil. Seventeen-year-old Isolde, a Lady Abbess, is trapped in a nunnery to prevent her from claiming her rich inheritance. As the nuns in her care are driven mad by strange visions, walking in their sleep, and showing bleeding wounds, Luca is sent to investigate and driven to accuse her. Forced to face the greatest fears of the dark ages—witchcraft, werewolves, madness—Luca and Isolde embark on a search for truth, their own destinies, and even love as they take the unknown ways to the real historical figure who defends the boundaries of Christendom and holds the secrets of the Order of Darkness."

  1. Great post, Christina. I love reading the what and whys of historical periods loved by other people and I definitely dream of a world without Facebook - I'm not a fan! 1940's is my favourite historical period to study and also my favourite movie era. I'm a huge fan of Film Noir :)

  2. I love those ads! I also love classic movies from that time period and I do love reading historical fiction set during the 40s.

If I could go back in time, I don't think I would unless it would be a brief visit where I was a silent observer. Then I'd want to go to the early 20th century and see what life really was like on a great estate like Downton Abbey or if I did go back in time to the 40s, I'd want to go to 1940s and 1950s Sri Lanka to see what life would have been like for my grandparents when they were my age.

    1. Me too! The movies from that time period are the best! I would love to be a silent observer as well....good call. Sri Lanka in the 40s and 50s would be awesome, especially if you could see what your grandparents were up to! Thanks for visiting, Christina!

  3. Oooo that is a tough question! I always think I'd like to go way back - maybe ancient egypt? But then I think about the plumbing situation and the general lack of personal hygiene and I decide maybe not. I would have loved to see the world as it was then though:)

  5. I would chose to live in Medieval England, or during the Paleo Indian time which was 10,000 BC. It takes my breath away to think of being a part of either of those time periods. :-)
