New Fall 2011 TV Shows: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

I usually record the season premiere of a bunch of new TV shows I'm interested in and narrow it down based on the first episode.  It's taken me a few weeks, but I think I've finally figured out what I'll be watching this fall when it comes to new TV.

The Good: New Shows That I Love-

Picture from CWTV.com
1)  Ringer (CW) - Anything that has elements of film-noir, I'll be sure to love. I know many critics gave Ringer a less than stellar review, but I found it be fresh, exciting and a great mystery.  Plus, I love Sarah Michelle Gellar.

2) The Secret Circle (CW) - After seeing the previews, I was sure that I wasn't going to watch this new series, but I was hooked after the first episode.  First of all, witches? Yes, please.  Secondly, the setting of the show is to-die-for. Can I please live in Chance Harbor? Lastly, Kevin Williamson (Dawson's Creek and Vampire Diaries) is attached to this new show.  P.S. Has anyone read the books?

3)  Revenge (ABC) - This is my new favorite show of 2011. It reminds me of a modern Count of Monte Cristo (one of my favorite books) meets the Hamptons.  The main character is taking revenge on the people who destroyed her family. I think it's brilliant so far and oh-so-fun.

4) Terra Nova (FOX) - Ok. It comes as no surprise that I love time travel and Jurassic Park was one of my favorite books/movies as a kid, which means Terra Nova is a must-watch-show for me this fall.  Oh, and one word for you: Spielberg.

The Bad: Shows I'm Still Undecided About-

1)  Pan Am (ABC) - If you know me, you know I love period dramas and anything that takes place in the '60s will surly capture my attention. I was completely captivated by the Pan Am stewardesses and I'm going to watch a few more episodes before I make a decision.

2) The Playboy Club (NBC) - Again, I love my period dramas and this one takes place in Chicago in the 1960s.  There's been a lot of controversy surrounding this show and I'm still undecided.

3) Hart of Dixie (CW) - A New Yorker relocates to Alabama + Rachel Bilson? Yes, please! I'm glad Rachel Bilson is back on primetime television; she's one of my favorite actresses, but I'm still not 100% sure about this one.

The Ugly: Shows I'm Going to Skip-

1) Up all Night (NBC) - I love Christina Applegate and Maya Rudolph, but this show has seriously no plot. Ok, so you have a kid, you are going back to work, your husband is a stay at home dad.....so what? Where's the ultimate conflict?? I didn't even think most of the show was that funny.

2) New Girl (FOX) - Confession: Zooey Deschanel annoys me. I'm kind of over her whole quirky act and impromptu singing.

3) Whitney- (NBC) - Simply put: I found this show to be not funny at. all. and the acting to be horrendous.

So what do you think?  Do you agree? Did I miss any new TV shows that you thought were good? Let me know what you think!

  1. I don't read much TV, I only watch Dexter. Pan Am does sound interesting. I love anything 60's.

  2. I really like the sound of some of these shows - we don't have any of them over here yet! I want to check out Revenge. I watched the promo a while back and loved it.

Did you check out Homeland last night? I'm interested in that one!

  3. Is so funny because I kept seeing the reviews of Revenge and thinking it was such a horrible premise and what a hateful plot to have... But then I reminded myself thy The count of Monte cristo is one of my favorite books and has basically the same plot! So I've gotten into that show too.

I actually like The New Girl (but I like Zoey Deschanel) and Whitney! I also like Two Broke Girls... It seem like I've gone from watching a lot of hour long dramas to preferring the shorter sitcoms.

  4. I'm not a huge TV watcher, but I have started watching REVENGE and RINGER. At the end of the month, I hope to add ONCE UPON A TIME to my "love" list (I have a feeling I won't love GRIMM, but I WILL try it out). Coupled with my ongoing love of GLEE and PARENTHOOD, and I'm watching waaaaay more TV than normal!

  5. I love Sarah Michelle Gellar too! I've had a girl crush on her since Buffy when I would have given anything to be here for a little while so I could hang out with Angel:) I'll have to give Revenge a try, I saw the previews but completely missed when it aired.

  6. I never heard of these shows before and unless they have high ratings in the US I probably won't be watching any of these. :)

  7. Thanks for these mini reviews! I have recorded a lot of these shows so far and haven't watched a single episode!!! (pan am, secret circle, playboy club and ringer!)

I agree that up all night looks horrid even though i never gave it a chance. But I have to disagree on new girl, i love it! but I do like zooey d.

hopefully i'll at least TRY the other shows before deleting them :)

  8. I love Ringer and so far I enjoy Terra Nova. I am also undecided about Pan Am and The Playboy Club. I don't typically watch sitcoms, but I watched the first ep of Whitney on On Demand because I was bored, and it was so beyond bad. I agree, I didn't find it funny, and I really hated the laugh track.

  9. I haven't seen any of these shows but I love the sound of Secret Circle :)

Not much tv-time for me lately.. way to much time has been spent in front of the laptop.

  10. oh no!! I liked New Girl and thought it was funny and cute. I haven't seen the others but I didn't like the previews of Whitney. I don't actually have time to add a new show to my list. Maybe I'll record it.

  12. I saw your comment over at Kate's (Literary Explorations) regarding the GWTW read-a-long and my reasons for not joining in are the same as yours...mainly NaNoWriMo in November. This is going to be my third attempt and I'm determined to really do it this time! I looked back at your posts about last year and I had a very similar experience. Once I got behind, it just snowballed and I was too overwhelmed to catch up. I do not want that to happen this year!

Regarding the new shows, I have totally missed Ringer and it irks me because I know it's really good. I too really liked Terra Nova, but I'm a big SciFi/Fantasy fan so that was really a no-brainer. It would have had to be extremely horrible for me to hate it and it wasn't. I actually like Up All Night and The New Girl, but Whitney was terrible. I'll be really surprised if that one makes it.

Anyway, nice to meet you. I'm a new follower.

  14. I'm SO with you on the bad. Sadly, I had all kinds of hope for Up All Night. New Girl grates on my nerves.

  15. I'm totally with you on skipping "New Girl" and "Whitney" -- the latter of which I found to be really dirty. I mean, honestly -- I'm no prude, but that show is ridiculous.

"Revenge" is also my new favorite show! So interesting and captivating, and I'm on the edge of my seat most of the time. Can't wait for the next one!

  16. I'm addicted to Revenge, Ringer and Hart of Dixie. They are soo good. I was kinda bummed that I hated the Secret Circle pilot. I really wanted to like it because I was dying to read the books but after the show, I'm not so sure.
