In My Mailbox #5

Today I am going to share the books that I received either through contests, lent to me, or for early review.  If you've read any of those books, please tell me what you think! This meme is hosted by the Story Siren.   Happy reading!

Boys, Bears, and a Serious Pair of Hiking Books by Abby McDonald
(Pub. Date: April 12, 2010) I received this through LibraryThing Early Reviewers.  I already finished it and wrote my review if you are interested.  It was a really fun read especially  since I was stuck in a blizzard all week!
Goodreads says, " Jenna may hail from the ’burbs of New Jersey, but Green Teen activism is her life. So when her mom suggests they spend the summer at Grandma’s Florida condo, Jenna pleads instead to visit her hippie godmother, Susie, up in rural Canada. Jenna is psyched at the chance to commune with this nature she’s heard about — and the cute, plaidwearing boys she’s certain must roam there. But after a few run-ins with local wildlife (from a larger-than-life moose to Susie’s sullen Goth stepdaughter to a hot but hostile boy named Reeve), Jenna gets the idea that her long-held ideals, like vegetarianism and conservation, don’t play so well with this population of real outdoorsmen. A dusty survival guide offers Jenna amusing tips on navigating the wilderness — but can she learn to navigate the turns of her heart?"

Corked: A Memoir by Kathryn Borel
(Pub. Date: February 16, 2010) I won this book through a contest and it looks really interesting. I don't normally read non-fiction, but I love biographies and memoirs.
Goodreads says, "Meet Kathryn Borel, bon vivant and undutiful daughter. Now meet her father, Philippe, former chef, eccentric genius, and wine aficionado extraordinaire. Kathryn is like her father in every way but one: she's totally ignorant when it comes to wine. And although Philippe has devoted untold parenting hours to delivering impassioned oenological orations, she has managed to remain unenlightened. But after an accident and a death, Kathryn realizes that by shutting herself off to her father's greatest passion, she will never really know him. Accordingly, she proposes a drunken father-daughter road trip. Corked is the uncensored account of their tour through the great wine regions of France. Uproarious, poignant, painfully introspective, and filled with cunning little details about wine, this is a book for any reader who has sought a connection with a complex family member or wanted to overcome the paralyzing terror of being faced with a restaurant wine list.

Witch and Wizard by James Patterson
One of my students lent me this book.  She really enjoyed it; plus, I love James Patterson so I'm sure this will be a fun read.
Goodreads says, "Everything is about to change. The government has seized control of every aspect of society, and now kids are disappearing. For 15 year-old Wisty and her older brother Whit, life turns upside-down when they are hauled out of bed one night, separated from their parents, and thrown into a secret compound for no apparent reason. It's clear that the new government will stop at nothing to suppress Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Being a Normal Teenager. For the sister and brother, the chaos started when Whit's girlfriend, Celia, was spirited away in a black van, never to be seen or heard from again. Locked inside their cells, the two fear that they have been taken to the very same complex that swallowed Celia and realize that a daring escape is their only hope of survival. While imprisoned together, Wisty and Whit start exhibiting strange abilities and powers they never knew they possessed. Their new talents lead them to believe that maybe there is a reason they were singled out. Can this newly minted witch and a wizard master their skills in time to save themselves, their parents--and maybe the world?"

  2. I just read and reviewed Boys, Bears, and a Serious Pair of Hiking Boots too. Love LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program! I have Witch and Wizard on my Kindle from when Amazon was giving it away but haven't had a chance to read it yet. We just got it at school and I haven't heard from any readers yet. If it isn't checked out, I think I'll display it. Happy reading!
